Sink. Swim. Sail. Your choice.

On December 1, we had the great pleasure to meet with many inspiring and inspired HR colleagues at the Zurich HR Summit 2017, organized by the Dutch Business Round Table.

First of all, a big thank you and great respect for #Maike van Oyen and her colleagues for pulling off such a great event. It takes a lot of inspiration and persistency to deliver what you have delivered. Well done!

During the HR Summit, we had the opportunity to talk about the changes that we see in our societies, businesses and in the expectations and goals of (young) people. We also shared with the audience how we see Business and HR Leaders responding in very different ways to all these waves of changes.

Our partner, Jackie Gittins (London) recently made an overview of what she sees as the relevant HR trends. Deloitte’s Human Capital trends 2017 provide insightful information.

  • The share of non-traditional workers is growing; 20-30% of the workforce this year in the US and Europe are contingent workers (Randstad Sourceright, 2017) and there are 1.3million workers engaged in the ‘gig economy’ in the UK (CIPD).
  • Organizations increase X-functional, project & ad hoc teams.
  • Shifts are taking place from individuals to teams & to networks of teams.
  • Also, a shift can be seen from authority & hierarchy to allowing teams to work together in more dynamic ways.
  • Employee Engagement becomes Employee Experience.
  • Consumerization of the workplace is happening and more organizations are hiring for roles designed to assess and improve the Employee Experience.
  • Spotlight on millennials is shifting to generation Z; a generation even more loyal, entrepreneurial, realistic and flexible than the millennials. And also with higher expectations.
  • Mobile tools dominate.

In our key-note we shared our view that all of us have to decide how we want to act / move / develop on a personal level in context of what is happening in our fast changing world. We strongly believe that there is not a luxury of not to decide. As our partner Daniela puts it clearly: “We cannot not decide!”

We presented three stages of not coping/coping with the transitions that are taking place in our society and businesses. These are sinking, swimming and sailing.

Some examples of sinking beliefs and statements that we have seen in our practices are:

  • Previous success will lead to future success.
  • It is complicated, I will take care of it.
  • The new people just have to fit in.
And in the swimming state the following can be heard:

  • Of course we are agile..we have a design thinking workshop in our Learning & Development landscape.
  • We are looking for best practices and copy/paste.
  • We have a diversity and inclusion office.

In our view sailing means that the following can be happening:

  • Experimenting with new ways of working.
  • Experimenting with new Leadership insights, based on research.
  • Speed of learning is significantly accelerating.
  • Coaching becomes the preferred leadership style….true coaching.
  • And we can see how the Employee Experience is being built.

Of course, HR leaders in the first place will have to start this journey themselves and with their teams in order to become credible as partners and leaders, who are taking their organizations successfully into a very different future. For sure it will be windy and stormy by times, but not deciding to go on board and get at the helm is not an option.

On a personal level the journey starts with forward looking self-renewal. As Avvartes, we want to support our HR colleagues in this journey. That is why we will begin a “Sail Think Tank“ for HR Leaders in Zurich in February. Our partners Daniela Thomas (focused on preparing organizations, teams and leaders for 4.0) and Aad JCM van Vliet (focused on senior leadership coaching and development) will facilitate this Sail Think Tank. We plan to organize two hours sessions for circa 6-7 participants initially every 6-8 weeks until yearend 2018. We regard this as part of our service to the HR community and that is why no fees will be charged to the participants.

If you want to know more please contact Aad (aad@avvartes.com) or Daniela (daniela@avvartes.com). We look forward to meeting you and to sailing together.
